Frequently Asked Questions
Sadly we are not able to cater for gluten free on these journeys. This is because the food is prepared by a traiditonal fish & chip shop where there is a presence of gluten.
The Tanfield Railway offers the opportunity to experience train travel as it was in the Victorian times with some beautifully preserved wooden coaches.
These coaches do not feature some comforts to which we have become accustomed. Seats may be wooden or bench type without cloth covering.
Originally lighting was gas but is now battery operated.
These coaches are not fitted with any heating systems so please dress appropriately to the weather you may experience during your journey, especially out of the summer season.
The train will depart from Andrew's House and take you to both Sunniside and East Tanfield. The fish & chips are collected at the latter.
If the weather is good, the train may pause in the middle of the line to allow visitors to view and take photographs of the marvellous Causey Arch Bridge - a fantastically old famous landmark on route.
