Steam Locomotive Driving Experience (Nottinghamshire)

Steam Locomotive Controls
Event Summary
Duration: 80 minutes
Departure Point: Ruddington Fields Station (NG11 6JS) - Car parking available (charges may apply).
What's Included: An 80 minute experience driving and firing an Austerity class steam locomotive at the Great Central Railway Nottingham
Accessibility: Not accessible due to many steps and the locomotive's safety-critical working environment. Age 18 plus only.
Dogs: Sorry, no dogs are allowed on this journey.

Realise that childhood dream and take the controls of a beautifully restored Austerity steam locomotive at the Great Central Railway Nottingham.

Perfect your skills at both firing and driving whilst you are on the footplate for an experience which lasts approximately 80 minutes. Skilled instructors will show you the controls, brief you on how to control the locomotive and monitor your progress.

Once you have returned, you can explore the wider Transport Heritage Centre at Ruddington.

The Great Central Railway was once a main line route from London to the north. You'll see the first hand how the line was constructed for this use and pass artefacts and history.

The very limited spaces available offer you the opportunity to say "I did that"!

Important Notes:

  • Participants cannot be accompanied by guest such as partners on the journey - but photographs will be taken to prove you did it, and then you can explore the site together.
  • Participants must be 18 or over, and physically fit enough to board / alight the locomotive using vertical steps from the ground.
  • Please arrive around 30 minutes before your session begins for a safety briefing.
  • The locomotive will be "light engine" - IE without carriages.
  • You may take it in turns at driving and firing with another participant at the same time.
